About the Student National Medical Association
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) was established in 1964 by medical students at Howard University and Meharry Medical College. It is the oldest and largest organization focused on the concerns of medical students of color. SNMA is dedicated to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.
The Wake Forest University School of Medicine Chapter was founded in 1990. Since its inception, we have been awared:
- Outstanding Community Service Award
- 2008 Regional Chapter of the Year
Additionally, many of our members hold regional and national positions. Our pre-medical undergraduate chapters include Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.
Chapter Vision
- To limit health disparities in the minority population of Winston-Salem.
- Increase minority recruitment, admissions, and retention at Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Chapter Mission
- To create and maintain community outreach prgrams that can be continued throughout the years.
- To increase institutional cultural awareness and sensitivity by implementing workships, seminars, and topics into the medical curriculum.
